Crater Lake

We picked up Shannon in Portland and headed down to Crater Lake National Park. Actually there is no camping in the National Park so we stayed in an RV park at Diamond Lake about 15 miles north of Crater Lake.

The first day we rented a bike for Shannon at the Diamond Lake lodge and biked around the lake. It’s a nice, easy 11 mile paved path which no one had any trouble with. Then we played some scrabble and had a campfire.

The second day we went horseback riding. Shannon’s horse apparently wasn’t much looking forward to the trip as after a short while it turned around and bolted back to the stable. Shannon held on tight and was fine, if a little scared. She was a trooper though and wanted to keep going, albeit on a different horse. After the day of horseback riding it is obvious to me why there aren’t too many cowboys left in this world. Based on where I was the most sore, they can’t be reproducing much.

The third day we did a bunch of sightseeing around the rim of Crater Lake and had lunch at the Crater Lake Lodge. What a beautiful sight. The water is a deep, rich blue due to the depth (at over 1300ft Crater is the deepest lake in the US) and purity of the water. It is made by a volcano which collapsed; the rim having filled in with water and snow over thousands of years. We also did some fishing on Diamond Lake at dusk but had no luck.

Today was a travel day from Crater back down to Ashland. I don’t know if I’m getting more used to driving the behemoth or the road was relatively straight and empty or just that it was a pretty drive but this was definitely the best travel day I have had so far.

Tomorrow we see our first play. For now I’ll just publish this without the pictures and hopefully add them later. I’m having trouble loading pictures to the blog from the 6 mega pixle camera though the 4 seems to work OK.
